America - These work songs
of deep water sailors created a common rhythm to "all pull together".
Such songs were sung to raise the anchor, hoist the yards on the masts,
and adjust the sails. The "hornpipe" dance was very competitive among
the sailors; usually the more complex steps were imitative of work
related movements such as hauling lines, pumping bilges and climbing
rigging.
